One day at my artificial intellingence exam at the univercyty one very wise professor and doctor of philosophy instead of torturing me with exam tickets simply asked me all of a sudden: 'Where the ideas live?'.
We had beautiful, long and very enjoyable conversation, several hours in a row. He told me about several popular concepts and i've told him what i think about them. One of those concepts was about some rather mystical place, some huge perpetual cloud, some sort of noosphere made from raw ideas and thoughts.
So, even if that's only a theory, such place if doesn't exist should be created! This here will be the place for ideas about sci-fi, general writing, anything related to creativity, deviations and everything like that. Questions, statements, ideas, concepts, discussion - everything is welcomed here. Related to my own story or not, it doesn't matter at all.

Ok, here's an example of what im thinking about. When still at the stage of early worldbuilding i've stumbled heavily with a concept of cyberspace and general networking in a future worlds. I don't remember this problem concerned very often but it's vital. Especially vital to my own storyline in particular.
Here's the deal. If we consider planet-wide network (like internet) everything's fine. It's already here in our life, we're in it, cyberspace and so on. But what about stellar system? Still possible. Relays, satellites, space-stations and fast-particle transmission. Note what i'm not talking about really scientific fiction. I'm no scientist and i like magical type of solutions in fiction. Yet i strive to at the very least keep some hint of realism...
The problem was, i've already created solid concept of Distortion-drives, somewhat mystical but crucial to my story. Imagine now - stellar systems aren't our boundaries anymore. A planetary system, political or other union can be made with planets so far away (heck, in a different galaxies, why not?) it will be literally useless for us to send any type of transmission through regular space. So, no network? No way!
First thing came to my mind - allrighty, lets just assume we've discovered magical particles, distortion-particles or something. After some thought - bleh. Deus-ex-machina, nothing more. I've needed something more elegant.
The concept of Distortion-based travel has some restrictions about sending living things away but lifeless stuff can go pretty far in one jump. So why won't we send a probe with data as a way to transmit something far away? Good. But delays will be too high. Then what? Send probes like that constantly, why not? Create a system of data-gates, heavily guarded, safe and sending data-carrier ships or drones regularly. Then sending anything or travelling in a virtual space will be like sending an email to the distant server. Not instantaneous, but fast enough. Of course this kind of solution will be costly, so it will be present only in densely populated areas like Metropolice (which actually consists of many many worlds).
Not a flawless solution, but suitable to this kind of universe, or so i think. What do you think?
